Representative Norma Torres Constituents Demand Accountability Over Her Support of Ongoing Genocide In Gaza
ONTARIO, California — Last Friday local residents protested outside Representative Norma Torres’s office, accusing her of neglecting her constituents while supporting the Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The protest was organized by CODEPINK Inland Empire, United for Peace, Chino Valley 4 Palestinian Liberation, So Cal Ceasefire, and Inland Valley Muslims.
Attendees criticized Torres for consistently avoiding and dismissing requests for appointments with her constituents. "Who does she represent?" asked one local attendee, highlighting the growing disconnect between the elected official and the people she serves.
One of the main points of contention is Torres's voting record on foreign policy. Critics pointed out that she has missed no opportunities to continue funding and sending weapons to Israel. This includes her vote against an amendment designed to restrict the use of carpet bombs in Israel, which many argue is a violation of the Leahy Law. The Leahy Law prohibits the U.S. from providing military assistance to foreign military units that violate human rights.
Torres's actions have been particularly contentious given her public stance as a proponent of peace and humanitarian efforts. "Our message to Torres is clear," said Ruba, a vocal attendee. "We want a ceasefire. We want you to stop facilitating war crimes, not the least of which is genocide. We want you to serve the public, who elected you and you are obligated to serve."
This growing discontent among her constituents underscores a broader call for greater accountability and transparency from elected officials. As the community continues to advocate for their voices to be heard, it remains to be seen how Representative Torres will respond to these mounting concerns.
